Most hiring managers wonder where to start when they have a new or existing position to fill. The rules are changing in the employment world and it pays in both time and money to have a strategy. Here are some thoughts.
The number one source for top candidates is personal referral. Anyone who has been in a job search has heard that networking counts. It particularly counts if you’re the employer. - Consider existing employees. Promotion from within is always a motivation factor. Good performers should be rewarded with higher level positions. Just don’t compromise. Perform the same rigorous process for recruiting internally as externally. In fact, you might pursue both routes at the same time and compare the talents. - Ask existing employees. A current employee will rarely recommend a deadbeat to work side-by-side with them. People are just naturally focused on quality and will avoid telling you about people they know will not perform.

In recent years, however, these three sources have become increasingly known for providing volumes of candidates but not necessarily good ones. Be sure to consider all the advertising options they offer (i.e. regional placements only) to narrow down the field.
Better still, don’t list your job but search their data base for people who have registered and meet your criteria. This will require you to have a subscription – probably worth it even if you’re only searching for one or two positions. By setting up very specific criteria you will be able to hone in on qualified candidates.

The final step is print advertising. Trade magazines or targeted journals will provide your best leads since they are typically only read by individuals interested in the specific segment covered. Unfortunately many of these publications are monthly and have long lead times for placement. The advantage is they’re generally cheaper and more effective than general interest publications such as newspapers. You might consider placing your ad here very early on in the process. Even if you fill the job before the ad comes out, you will have only wasted a small amount of money.
